The next morning, my resolve to demand answers from Molina began to weaken. I decided to start by asking nicely and see how that went. If I met with him in person, perhaps I could convince him, especially if I brought him a box of freshly baked muffins.

Jennifer raised her eyebrows when I told her I’d be back after a quick stop at the police station.

She gestured to the bag of muffins. “If those don’t get him talking, I don’t know what can. They’re dope.”

“Dope?” I asked. “I didn’t put anything in them. Though, if he doesn’t tell me what I want to know…”

Jennifer snorted a laugh. “Don’t. Just don’t.”

“Okay, I won’t.” I waited for a response, but she was still laughing. “Well, see ya.”

During the short drive to the police station, I called Freddie. “What does dope mean?”

“Do we need to have a talk?” she asked.

“Like if someone says my muffins are dope,” I clarified.

“Oh, that means really good. It sounds like you’re in your car. Where are you headed on a Saturday morning?”

For a moment, I considered telling her I was running an errand, but I knew she’d see right through me. Somehow, she could always tell when I was keeping something from her. “I’m on my way to see Deputy Molina. He hasn’t been returning my calls. I’m guessing he’ll be working even though it’s Saturday since he’s in the middle of a murder investigation.”

“Have you ever considered the police might be able to handle the investigation without your help?” she asked.

“No, not really,” I said, only partly kidding. “Besides, as a concerned citizen who witnessed a crime and found a dead body, I think it’s reasonable to expect to be kept in the loop.”

“I see,” Freddie said, though I could hear the doubt in her voice. “Let me know if Deputy Molina agrees with you.”

“Is there any information about Eric Vitello’s cause of death that you’re willing to share with me?”

Instead of answering my question, she asked, “Are you busy tonight? I could stop by, especially if you had a shepherd’s pie left over from lunch.”

I grinned, hoping that meant she was willing to share information. “I’ll set aside some for you.”

Just as I ended the call, I pulled into the city hall parking lot. I knew the way to Molina’s office, so I slipped past the information desk before the woman behind it noticed me.

No one sat at the front desk in the area that served as the police station, but I knew my way to Molina’s office. Giving the door a quick tap, I pushed it open and stepped inside. Deputy Molina looked up from his desk and frowned.

“Good morning, Deputy Molina,” I said. “I brought you home-baked muffins. Do you have a minute?” I set the bag of muffins on his desk.

“No,” he answered quickly, eyeing the bag hungrily. “I am in the middle of a murder investigation, in case you forgot.”

I sat down across from him. “Did you question the pilot of the plane?”

He seemed to be deciding whether to answer my question or kick me out of his office.
